The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
