The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
