The Hit Drama Announced for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
