The Former President's Policies Present a Risk to Civilized Society.
His internal and external initiatives – including the effort to overturn the election five years ago to recent moves and warnings – undermine both national and global jurisprudence. But that’s not all.
They endanger the core idea of what we mean by.
The moral purpose of civilized society is to forestall the dominant from preying upon and using the vulnerable. Failing that, we risk being permanently immersed in a conflict of all against all where only the fittest wins.
This ideal is embedded of America’s founding documents. This is also the heart of the modern framework of international relations championed by the America, emphasizing multilateralism, democratic governance, fundamental freedoms, and the supremacy of law.
But, it is a delicate construct, easily violated by those who would exploit their influence. Maintaining it demands that the powerful have enough integrity to avoid seeking short-term wins, and that the public demand responsibility should they falter.
Absolute power is not right. It makes for instability, chaos, and hostilities.
Each instance entities that are advantaged prey upon those that are weaker, the fabric of our shared norms unravels. If such aggression are left unchecked, the system fails. If not stopped, the world can plunge into chaos and war. History provides ample precedent.
Our current reality is a society and world with deepening divides. Influence and wealth are more concentrated than ever before. This invites the elite to exploit the weaker because they act with a sense of above the law.
The wealth of certain tycoons is almost beyond comprehension. The influence of global industrial giants covers a vast portion of the world. Artificial intelligence is could further concentrate wealth and power to a greater degree. The offensive capability of the leading countries is unmatched in the annals of time.
Enabled by complicit legislators and a sympathetic high court, the presidency has been turned into the most dominant and unchecked instrument of state power in history.
Put it all together and you see the looming crisis.
An unbroken thread links previous transgressions to current threats. These were founded upon the overconfidence of invincibility.
One observes a similar pattern in other global contexts: in territorial invasions, in expansive ambitions, and in the rampant monopolization by powerful corporate entities.
However, strength without restraint does not create right. It fosters uncertainty, revolution, and bloodshed.
The lessons of the past reveal that laws and norms to check the powerful also safeguard them. If these guardrails are removed, their endless appetite for increased control and resources ultimately lead to their downfall – taking down their enterprises, countries, or domains. And risk world war.
This kind of lawlessness will haunt the nation and the world – and the very idea of a rules-based order – for years to come.
