An extensive manufacturing zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is dealing with radioactive pollution following an official taskforce found traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities inside the area, which includes businesses that export frozen seafood.

This discovery has led to immediate cleanup operations and the moving of nearby residents, following a similar pollution scare in the United States that was linked to the Indonesian plants.

A major international store chain is one of the companies that have withdrawn items from its shelves following the discovery.

Investigation and Detection of Pollution

Indonesian authorities initiated an inquiry when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a consignment of frozen coated prawns exported by an Indonesian firm.

Officials released an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to discard the product and not sell it, even though the found level was far below the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 they had detected would not present an immediate hazard to consumers.

The authority stated: “The primary impact on health of worry after extended, repeated low dose exposure (eg through consumption of contaminated food or water over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, resulting from harm to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Health Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two factories in the industrial area were affected. The official taskforce did not identify the twenty-one other production facilities, but said they would immediately receive decontamination procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear agency.

A senior official stated that people living in strongly polluted areas would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health officials additionally conducted checks on nearby workers and people located near the industrial estate, finding 9 people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.

Decontamination and Containment Measures

The affected locations will immediately undergo cleanup procedures by Indonesia's nuclear agency. Authorities have further designated the area of a recycled metal factory as an containment center for contaminated materials.

Indonesia, which has no nuclear power plants or arms programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from abroad.

Origin of Pollution and Import Limits

An official representative told reporters that recycled metal shipments were the likely source of pollution and confirmed the government would immediately impose restrictions on metal waste imports. It was stated that vehicles were additionally being checked for potential exposure as they moved through the region.

Regarding Caesium-137 and Health Concerns

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear element that usually enters the environment as a consequence of nuclear experiments or incidents, such as the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in earth, products and the atmosphere.

The amount detected in the chilled shrimp was far lower than regulatory intervention levels, but the agency stated prolonged exposure to even small amounts of caesium was associated to an elevated risk of cancer.
