Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent term surfaced several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities disputes these accusations, consistent with how it refutes everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on peace has now become a cynical way to whitewash war.
