Analysis Finds Artificial Compounds in Our Food Supply Generating a Public Health Cost of $2.2tn a Year

Experts have issued a pressing warning, stating that many artificial chemicals that underpin contemporary farming are driving higher rates of cancer, neurodevelopmental disorders, and reproductive issues, while simultaneously undermining the basis of global agriculture.

The annual health cost attributed to exposure to substances like plasticizers, bisphenols, pesticides, and Pfas is reckoned to be up to $2.2 trillion—a staggering sum on par with the combined profits of the planet's 100 largest publicly traded corporations, according to a fresh report.

Additionally, the majority of environmental damage is still not accounted for. Yet even a narrow evaluation of ecological impacts—factoring in farm declines and the cost of complying with water safety standards for these chemicals—implies an additional economic impact of $640 billion. The study also cautions of serious demographic ramifications, stating that if current exposure levels to hormone-altering chemicals remain, there could be from 200 million and 700 million fewer births globally between 2025 and 2100.

A Stark "Wake-up Call" from Medical Professionals

A lead researcher on the report, a respected paediatrician and academic of global public health, called the findings a "necessary wake-up call".

"Humanity really has to wake up and do something about the issue of synthetic chemicals," he remarked. "In my view that the challenge of synthetic pollution is equally grave as the challenge of global warming."

He explained a worrisome shift in childhood diseases during his lengthy career. Whereas illnesses from infectious agents have dropped significantly, there has been an "dramatic increase" in non-communicable diseases, with increasing exposure to thousands of synthetic chemicals being a "significant cause."

The Ubiquitous Substances in Our Food

The analysis particularly assesses the influence of four groups of artificial chemicals commonplace in global food production:

  • Phthalates and Bisphenols: Frequently used as plastic agents, they are present in containers and single-use gloves used in handling.
  • Agrochemicals: These enable large-scale agriculture, with huge monoculture farms applying large volumes on crops to eliminate weeds, and many foods being sprayed after harvesting to maintain freshness.
  • "Forever chemicals": Used in non-stick paper, food containers, and packaging, these long-lasting chemicals have built up in the environment to the point of entering the food chain through pollution.

All of these substances have been connected to serious harms, including hormonal disruption, various types of cancer, birth defects, intellectual disability, and weight gain.

An Unregulated Problem with Unknown Consequences

Human and ecological contact to synthetic chemicals has surged since the 1950s, with global manufacturing growing over two hundred times. Today, there are more than 350,000 different chemicals on the international market.

Importantly, unlike medicines, there are minimal safeguards to ensure the safety of commercial chemicals before they are put into common use, and inadequate tracking of their effects afterward. Some have later been found to be highly toxic to people, wildlife, and the environment.

One expert expressed particular concern about chemicals that harm the developing brains and endocrine-disrupting compounds. He stressed that the chemicals analyzed in the report are "just the tip of the iceberg," representing a small fraction of substances for which robust toxicological data exists.

"What terrifies me profoundly is the many thousands of chemicals to which we're all subjected every day about which we know nothing," he confessed. "Until one of them causes something overtly dramatic, like children to be born with severe deformities, we're going to go on mindlessly subjecting ourselves."

This analysis finally presents a stark picture of a hidden crisis within the world's food supply, calling for immediate action and reform to mitigate this colossal health and environmental burden.
